Not just because it's full of pumpkins (yum!) or because all the skeletons in my save file finally fit in (aww!), but because Minecraft Live is back on October 15, and this year it's bigger and blockier than ever! If you've never watched our epic, once-a-year livestream before, then you are in for a treat. also minecraft was programmed over a decade ago.A screaming goat once told me that October is the BEST month. other games don't have the massive amount of terrain data that minecraft has, and it doesn't actively track live changes to the world in the same manner that minecraft does. ![]() a 12 chunk render distance will load under 500 chunks.īasically, the game is just constantly in a state of loading, reading, simulating, and saving constantly. a 32 chunk render distance will load over a thousand chunks. this is why render distance affects performance so dramatically. The game can handle a lot of chunks, but not an infinite number of chunks. every time you leave a chunk and it unloads from memory the game saves it to disk and puts it on ice until the next time you are in the vicinity. every x minutes the game saves all loaded chunks and writes that data to disk. a typical minecraft world can easily be ~500MB of data, split into dozens and dozens of files. the "save file" is the entirety of the world. your save file isn't one save file that contains your inventory and experience. that's how it tracks changes in the world. it's like animal crossing in that respect.įrom a technical standpoint, the game is constantly writing data to disk. every minute spent in the world is a real minute spent in the world. from a gameplay perspective that's part of the challenge and charm of the world - every change is permanent. minecraft is a world that is constantly changing. ![]() Can I use NBTExplorer or some other program to copy+paste the buildings and structures that I've built to the same server or a new server? Is it possible to somehow copy a previous "auto-save" (not a backup) files and use them to "roll back" a save successfully? Does MC have a hidden file (either within the world folder or outside of it, somewhere in AppData) that would just write over the ones I kept putting into it? Is that because MC has a hidden "current" file that would just write over the ones I tried putting into it? I tried loading into the game but instead of loading my structure from the previous gameplay, all structured were wiped completely. I tried to copy-paste those files into their respective folders (for example a player.dat file from 4/1/21 to replace one from 4/7/21) and any file that would replace my game from 4/7/21. I also heard that people can straight up go into the player.dat file and change things around with NBTExplorer.Īlso when browsing through the MC AppData folder it's very clear that MC has files of my game previous to the one with my destroyed building. Is that even a thing? I'm running the MC Java version on a Win10 PC. I heard that there's a "structures" file that people could find self-built stuff in there but I don't see it. I spent a lot of time making it, so I really don't want to lose it. I had a backup that I made, but that was weeks before I even built my building. I made the mistake of spawning a mob that destroyed most of my building and wanted to somehow roll back the world to an earlier save. I noticed that Minecraft will autosave while playing, exiting, and even while trying to force-crash a session. (#spoiler) = neat!
